In response to various articles on toll projects in Austin:TX

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is an agency in which decisions by the few rule the many.

The State agency let's foreign companies purchase 50-year contracts to build and maintain toll roadways and Texans now have a lost, runaway agency.

Toll roads are a last resort, not a first option.  They encourage long-term debt.  And usually property values decline in the adjacent areas.

A case in point why toll roads are not the solution to every problem:  Hwy 130 was built without study or awareness of who would use it.  The 85 mph speed  was the carrot dangling above our heads, but it didn't work.  Very few cars and trucks are using the tollway and it is hurting the state.  Taxpayers are reeling from that poor decision and are losing millions of tax dollars.
.
Currently, TxDOT is building 2 toll lanes on MoPac… another poor idea.  Instead of widening the entire roadway to facilitate more cars and thereby easing traffic congestion, TxDOT's 2-lane dysfunctional approach adds significant long-term costs and won’t relieve traffic.

TxDOT and toll road enthusiasts are stuck in a desert of decision-making.  They seem to see only quick dollars, but it’s merely a mirage.  We need intelligent decisions to fix traffic congestion, not toll roads!

Austin, Texas pushing toll roads again...whether we need them or not

In response to public statements by Precinct 3 Travis County Commissioner Gerald Daugherty regarding his gung-ho push for toll roads whenever possible because he tells us that toll roads are the only way to get roads we need built quickly.  What Daugherty does NOT tell us is that building toll roads makes those roads cost much more than roads built with other tax dollars from gasoline and other allotted taxes that were approved and passed for TxDOT’s use to build and maintain our roadways.
Commissioner Daugherty also does NOT tell us that up to 80 percent of the tolls collected go immediately off the top to the companies that maintain the toll collection.  Now that’s a lot of money that adds years to the cost of paying for that roadway.

In addition, toll roads make certain that the public will pay toll taxes [after all, what are tolls if not new taxes] for 50 years because that’s what the contracts usually are with toll road companies.  What we look at with each new toll road is long-term debt and Daugherty never acknowledges how much more toll roads cost all of us in the long term.  He wants roads built quickly, as we all do, but at what cost with tolls?

We need to build toll roads only as a last resort and NOT the first knee-jerk reaction that Daugherty and other pro-toll road enthusiasts want.  Toll roads are NOT in the communities best interests.  Toll roads are in the best interests of the toll road companies who spend huge amounts of campaign contributions to make sure they continue to buy lucrative contract from our state and representatives.

We need to stop building toll roads as though they are the best invention since sliced bread.  We need to get smarter about how we spend our tax dollars and maybe we need to put a lid on officials like Daugherty who just want to spend our tax dollar without looking at the long term implications and huge costs.

Jeb and Donald... barking at the people

In Response: rainmakers are selling folks what they want to hear...

Neither Jeb! nor The Donald will win the 2016 GOP Presidential nomination.
Both are too obtuse for the American people. The Don is too grandiose and acts too much like a carnival barker, while Jeb is too liberal for the good of the people.  The GOP will NOT support either of these two.
That said, I like a lot of what Trump is throwing out at the American people, but he has yet to say HOW he would do the things he is telling us he wants to do.

To be honest, the GOP has yet to have a candidate that would offer A REAL option to Hillary Clinton.

And the most scary thing is how inept, unprofessional, willful, arrogant, entitled and dishonest Hillary Clinton has been and still is and yet the American people will vote for her over any current GOP candidate.

All this does NOT bode well for the American people.

another rainy day...

It seems endless this year, rain every day.  They closed some of the roads near us.  With the new rains, many more people will become homeless.  There are more missing and found dead every day now.  It’s getting scary and I’m wondering if I should start building an ark, or a boat or something.  it could get there.  Rain, winds, tornadoes...

Guess you’ll get these storms today or tomorrow.  We’ve had 6 years of drought and now more than one year of consistent rain.  The weather has become relentless, extreme and often ruthless for all of us, which ironically seems to parody current human existence.

If I were religious, I would believe in God.  If I were a coward, I would run... but where?

I guess I don’t have to be religious to pray that the world finds itself, before it’s too late.

Random acts of kindness... harder to find those these days.  Maybe we all should view the weather as a sign for positive change?  It couldn’t hurt.

the luxury to retrospect...

I have such a different view now of the Obama’s than I did in 2008.  I am so sorry I voted for him the first time, but I know I did so because of the poor alternatives.

The world we have created has evolved into a dangerous one on so many levels and I honestly don’t know what can be done about it.  My hope for for the inherent good of most humans will surface and may overthrow the devils who are in charge.  It is harder these days for me to be very optimistic, as I once was in my early youth.

I worry every day for our children and grandchildren.  I hope they find a niche they may be in and feel comfortable in.  It is getting harder to find that kind of niche.  I have been very lucky for the niche I have created for myself and the one the world has let me live in, up until now.  All that can change in a few seconds.

2016 Presidential Election: the more things change, the more they stay the same...

Illegals, 2016 Presidential Election

Obama and his cohorts have always bent over backwards for illegals while screwing American citizens.  Hillary Clinton has the same mentality and direction.  We, the People, have to keep her out of the White House.

Currently, the GOP has split itself into too many negative atoms.  Once again the GOP is allowing more than one dozen candidates to rise up and weaken the Party.  The GOP should have learned from its previous history in the last several elections when too many cooks (candidates) spoiled the broth (allowed the Democrats to stand united... and win); there was only Obama and Hillary at the top of their food chain.

It’s going to be another mess for the GOP unless the Party thinks out of the box and fully supports one candidate, sooner than later.

The Ongoing Saga of Financing Public Education in Texas

Public Education in Texas

Public Education is NOT a priority for Texas Legislators.  Historically and currently... that's a fact!
The Texas Legislature is bound by the Texas Constitution to provide a quality public education for Texas children.  Perhaps what is needed here is a definition of a "quality education" and how much is required to provide it.
More and more each year, the Texas Legislature has diverted its constitutional responsibility onto local governments to provide the financing.  The local governments in turn have oppressed homeowners to provide those dollars.
Roughly 80 percent of property taxes goes to finance public education.
That's just not right.
If the Legislature does NOT want Public Education then it needs to privatize education, but it must change the Texas Constitution to do that and the public needs to approve it in a public referendum.

Until that time, the State must adequately finance Public Education, which currently it is not doing.

re: Horse Slaughtering rears its ugly head again and again...

Say “Nay!” to Horse Slaughtering… Part II

the beat goes on....
reprinted by

What’s new at the dinner table: “Pass the horse, please.”
by Peter Stern
The U.S. Congress just approved the sale of horsemeat for human consumption, thus opening the doors for the increased slaughter of horses to sell horse meat here and abroad.
There are big bucks in the selling of horse flesh and big money also drove Congress to approve the measure, finally even after years of anti-slaughter lobbyists and horse protection sentiment prevented various similar bills during the past decade from being approved.
I am providing below the article I wrote against horse slaughter 4 years ago and why it is still a bad idea to remove protection of our horse population in the name of capitalism and profiteering
.
By Peter Stern, Driftwood, TexasOriginally Posted 5/21/2007 9:17:15 AM
Well, the battle goes on here in Texas for most people to protect the honor and status of the horse. State Senators and House Representatives are trying to sneak in “end around” legislation that is generated for their special interests to circumvent the recent Federal ruling that closed the two horse slaughterhouses in North Texas. Horse slaughtering may be the new terrorism that Americans need to battle.
Bel-Tex of Fort Worth; Dallas Crown of Kaufman, Texas, and Cavel International of Dekalb, Ill. are the only horse slaughterhouses inside the U.S. Because of basic economics and special interest contributions, most legislators have opted NOT voting to close the horse slaughterhouses. Let’s face it, horse slaughterhouses are good business. Horse meat is sent overseas for human consumption to France, Belgium and other countries, where they are willing to pay top dollar for their horse flesh.
Slaughterhouse owners and their legislators tell Americans that they are providing a needed and humane service of eliminating unwanted, old and sickly horses. The truth is far from that point. There is little distinction made of these categories and of healthy horses. Furthermore, the slaughtering of horse is NOT a humane process as may be seen below. We’ve lost our horse-sense when we let this creature die such horrific deaths.
Sen. Glenn Hegar, R-Katy, inserted an amendment into a bill on the duties and regulations of the Texas Animal Health Commission. It said animals tested by the commission would be exempt from the part of the state agriculture code banning the sale of horse meat for human consumption. Passed around under a veiled amendment to another bill, apparently neither Hegar or other legislators seem to care to make this amendment more public for fear of public outcry.
The provision that Hegar added to Senate Bill 911 before colleagues actually approved that it would allow the sale of horse meat for human consumption, if the animals are tested by the commission. There was no debate before passage of the bill, which was carried by Sen. Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls. Only Democratic Sens. Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio and Kirk Watson of Austin registered votes against Hegar’s amendment.
THE TERRORS OF HORSE SLAUGHTER
Before shipping American horses to slaughterhouses in Texas, Illinois and as far away as Canada, the horses are placed into over-crowded holding pens often standing in disease-infested muck. Often sick, the horses are crammed into double-decked cattle trucks. Without sufficient room to hold their heads upright, they travel for 36 hours through summer heat or brutal winter cold without stopping for rest, food or water.
At the slaughterhouse, the horse is electrically prodded into the “kill box” to be repeatedly bludgeoned in the skull by a dead-bolt gun with a four-inch nail. Alive, and often conscious, the horse is then shackled by a rear leg, hoisted into the air, its throat slit and body dismembered.
No horse is spared this ordeal. These hungry, dehydrated, fatigued and terrified horses include not only the old, sick, blind and crippled, but the young and healthy, our children’s pets, mares with helpless foals standing at their side, and our wild mustangs.
A positive example: During 1998 California’s Save the Horses Prohibition of Horse Slaughter and Sale of Horse meat Initiative, Proposition 6 makes it illegal for anyone to “possess, buy, sell or export from California any horse where that person knows – or should have known – that any part will be used for human consumption.”
The actual photos of horses being slaughtered are not for everyone’s eyes. To see some of the telling photos and get a real perspective that slaughtering these noble creatures is NOT in their best interests as the pro-slaughtering lobby tells us, go to:
Again, this is nothing more than abuse and it is being inflicted upon an animal that has never historically been considered a food animal in the U.S., but rather a working partner and friend to man. An animal used primarily for pleasure, work, recreation and sport.
The lies of the horse slaughterers can’t stand up to the graphic footage of the realities.
Help expose horse slaughter and help expose the people like Rep. Hegar who secretly support it for profiteers! This is NOT a humane treatment of horses as is claimed.
Horse slaughterhouses are vile and contemptible options for destroying the horse population by inhumane methods. The pro-lobby for horse slaughterhouses has bought the support of many legislators. Only the voice of the American people can put an end to the torture and murder of these noble creatures.
Texans must contact their Senators and House Representatives to ensure that this anti-horse legislation never gets approved and that the state honor and enforces the ruling handed-down by the federal court.
Say “Nay” loudly and clearly to elected officials. Horse slaughterhouses must go the way of the dinosaurs and so should killing horses in the U.S. for human consumption abroad. It is interesting that two of the three horse slaughterhouses are based here in Texas, where historically cowboys only ride and work their horse partners — NOT eat them.

Ted Cruz jumps into the 2016 Presidential Race

I'll be "short and sweet" on discussing Cruz...

Ted Cruz simply does not know how to work and play well with others.  We already have a President like that [Obama], so we don't need another.
I like a lot of things Cruz says and how he stands on various issues, but you get a feel that he's a nut-job with a genius standing in the shadows.
He likes to rub people the wrong way...too much.
Right now he's 9th on the list of possible GOP candidates, maybe just before Rick Perry.
Back in 2012 Romney didn't get his party's support either, until he seemed to be the best candidate in a field of lunatics, so who knows what will happen to Cruz once the Primary begins.
Stay tuned, folks...

What to do about public education

What to do about public education...

The legislature still doesn't know squat about what to do about education.  As long as legislators and business people only are the ones deciding on what to do about public education, the system will continue to fail.
School-Based Management (SBM) is needed to ensure that each school in each district is providing a quality education for the children in that district.  A SBM Team at each school should be comprised of no more than 12 members: teachers, parents, business people, students, counselors, psychologist, principal should be at the table agreeing what is in the best interests of their community school.  And each school in each district should do this.  Then get rid of rigid, insignificant and archaic State Exams.
A State Board of Education (SBOE) sitting off in some ivory tower that determines education for the entire state will continue to fail education.
Legislators simply do NOT get it.  They should NOT be the ones to determine educational outcomes and programs.  Individual communities are the solution.
